Slaa’s safety worries Chadema

Member of Chadema Governing Council, Mr Mabere Marando, speaks to journalists in Dar es Salaam yesterday. Right is the director of Organisation and Training, Mr Singo Kigaila.

Mr Marando said the party has retrieved phone recordings and messages between senior CCM officials, members of the security agencies and Mr Kangezi, proving there is an evil mission

Dar es Salaam. Opposition party Chadema yesterday accused one of its security officers of being used by CCM to spy on the party’s secretary general, Dr Willibrod Slaa.

The party’s member of the National Governing Council, Mr Mabere Marando, claimed they have discovered that Mr Khalid Kangezi, a bodyguard to Dr Slaa, was plotting with CCM to harm Dr Slaa.

Mr Marando said the party has retrieved phone recordings and messages between senior CCM officials, members of the security agencies and Mr Kangezi, proving the evil scheme against Dr Slaa existed.

According to Mr Marando, Mr Kangezi has been in contact with up to 22 state security agents for two years now. He named CCM deputy chairman for Mainland Philip Mangula as the CCM official who has been communicating frequently with Mr Kangezi for two years now and that he has been sending him airtime to eavesdrop on Chadema meetings.

Efforts yesterday to reach Mr Mangula for reaction were futile as he was not available. His mobile phone went unanswered when contacted by The Citizen. CCM publicity secretary Nape Nnauye was also not available.

Dar es Salaam Special Police Zone Commander Suleiman Kova said he had not received any information regarding the issue when asked to verify reports by Chadema that they have reported the matter to the police for investigations.

Addressing a press conference at the party offices, Mr Marando said Mr Kangezi was employed by Chadema as Dr Slaa’s bodyguard and has been a close personal assistant to him. “He is infact responsible for testing the food and water that his boss takes,” said Mr Marando.

He said after being suspicious of the bodyguard, the party conducted investigations and made a startling discovery that from December, last year, he had received Sh7 million from national security agents.

Mr Marando claimed that upon interrogation, Mr Kagenzi revealed he was under pressure from unnamed security agents to harm Dr Slaa. “He was spotted two days ago boarding a vehicle belonging to the head of a security agency in Kinondoni,” said Mr Marando.

Chadema says it has handed over the issue to the police.

Meanwhile, NCCR-Mageuzi youth wing has proposed Dr George Kahangwa to vie for the presidency through the Coalition of Defenders of People’s Constitution (Ukawa) in the next General Election.

The opposition youth wing told reporters in Dar yesterday that the young members in the party would contribute money for him to pick the nomination form for him next month.
