SHINYANGA.The main opposition Chadema has dealt a blow to the ruling CCM in Shinyanga Municipality where its candidates won 29 streets against 26 claimed by CCM in closely contested local government elections.
But the appeal of Chadema in the region did not go further as the opposition party lost heavily to CCM in races for posts in village and suburban elections.
Festo Kang’ombe, the elections supervisor in Shinyanga said CCM won in 14 villages out of 17 that were contested. Chadema won in only one village.
According to Mr Kang’ombe, the ruling party also claimed victories in 65 suburbs of the municipality compared to 18 that went to the main opposition.
“It has been a CCM-Chadema showdown in Shinyanga Urban before the ruling CCM made a solo run in villages and suburbs of the municipality,” said the supervisor.
Kahama District council director Felix Kimaro said Chadema also dominated street level elections by winning in 18 streets out of the contested 32 streets. CCM won 14 of them.
The fierce fight for voters’ appeal in Shinyanga Region also resulted in several unusual incidents. A CCM agent in Ndembezi Ward, Shinyanga Municipality, Mahona Pole, died suddenly during the vote counting exercise.
The late Pole had complained of losing vision due to a severe headache shortly before his sudden demise. He was rushed to the hospital where died while being treated.
At Mageuzi Street in Ngokolo Ward here, former Chadema candidate Emanuel Joshua, who defected to CCM in the last hours, was announced the winner of the chairmanship post in absentia..
